The Unconference: Changing How Professionals Generate Knowledge

On 3 November 2012, MarketingCamp.org is hosting its inaugural unconference, MarketingCamp Silicon Valley. As one of the co-founders of this event, I can say that our team has worked diligently to develop a program designed to provide marketers with the opportunity to engage peers on the industry topics which are reshaping marketing practices.

At MarketingCamp, participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences, through forums and discussions designed to promote learning from peers and mentors. It will also be an opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and grow business networks.

Our unconference is based on a format originally developed at Open Space Technology. This format has proven tremendously successful in bringing people from diverse backgrounds together and enabling them to discuss their ideas in a participatory forum. Overall, unconferences are about having fun while learning from ' and engaging with ' peers and mentors. Such encounters enable participants to experience more meaningful conversations than are possible at traditional conferences.

What I have found most amazing about the unconference is how many diverse fields are now relying on it to generate important conversations:

  • Creative Week Marketing Group: This annual meeting celebrates and explores creativity within New York City's advertising, design, digital media, and related art-based fields.
  • EarthSummit 2012 ' Rio+20: Brings together the world's thought leaders ' affiliated with the United Nations ' to discuss strategies for poverty eradication and sustainable development.
  • ProductCamp: This Silicon Valley-based unconference for product managers and other industry professionals focuses on exploring new ideas in product development and marketing; it has been replicated worldwide and presented in many major cities.
  • Science Foo Camp: This annual invitation-only event ' hosted by Nature, O'Reilly Media, and Google ' provides 300 scientists with a forum for discussing the future of information technology.
  • CloudCamp: Event founder [Dave Nielsen http://twitter.com/davenielsen] ' a member of the MarketingCamp Silicon Valley team ' developed these popular unconferences to provide industry professionals with opportunities to explore and learn how they can advance cloud computing.

I could have easily added many other groups to this list. But what really matters is not the specifics of each unconference, but simply that more organizations are using an unconference-type format to drive innovation within their fields and advance learning for industry professionals.

Our team designed MarketingCamp Silicon Valley without specific agenda topics in mind. Instead, we want to provide participants with the opportunity to decide how they will engage each other. Meaning that instead of sponsoring sessions where attendees passively sit listening quietly to presentations, we created an event that enables participants to propose and present topics, and to actively engage in open conversations. All for the purpose of advancing the marketing industry's combined knowledge.

Register today to attend our inaugural unconference. Respond quickly so you can participate in this opportunity to collaborate and network with your peers. Space is limited; over 300 marketing professionals have already registered. We are really looking forward to you joining us and hearing the insights you'll bring to the conversation.
